MySQL Database Architect (Hands-On)
Job Description
We are seeking a hands-on MySQL Database Architect for a remote contract of 6+ months. This is an engineering and development role, not a pure administration role: you will design MySQL architecture and also get into the weeds on tuning and production issues. You will lead installation, upgrade and migration work, design replication and HA/DR strategy, and be the go-to person when complex production database problems need to be solved independently. The ideal candidate will have 8 to 10+ years of experience, deep MySQL and InnoDB expertise, and a solid Linux/Unix background. Experience with AWS or Azure cloud platforms is a plus, as the role may involve cloud-hosted MySQL environments. Requirements • 8–10+ years of database engineering experience • Strong hands-on MySQL architecture experience, including installation, configuration, upgrades and migrations • Deep expertise in SQL, indexing, query optimization and performance tuning • Experience with MySQL Replication, InnoDB, HA/DR, and backup and recovery design • Experience leading database migration and upgrade projects • Solid Linux/Unix background • Ability to troubleshoot complex production database issues independently • Nice to have: AWS or Azure cloud platform experience
Responsibilities
- Design and own MySQL database architecture for production environments
- Install, configure and upgrade MySQL instances
- Lead database migration and upgrade projects end to end
- Design replication, HA/DR, and backup and recovery strategies
- Optimize SQL, indexing and query performance
- Tune InnoDB and server configuration for performance and stability
- Troubleshoot and resolve complex production database issues
- Work hands-on alongside engineering teams rather than in an admin-only capacity
- Recommend and implement improvements to database performance, resilience and scalability
- Partner with application teams to resolve database-related production incidents
