Lead Software Engineer (Scala / Akka / AWS)
Job Description
The OperAxis team is seeking a Lead Software Engineer for a 12-month contract with a heavy equipment manufacturing client based in Chicago, IL (hybrid; Chicago-area candidates preferred, 100% remote considered). You will build platform notification services in Scala and Akka that alert customers to events critical to efficiently operating their engines and machines, while mentoring engineers and providing technical direction. The ideal candidate has a bachelor's degree with 10+ years of experience (or a master's with 8+), strong Scala and Akka skills, and experience delivering highly available systems on AWS. Requirements: - Must have: AWS, CI/CD tools, Microservices and Scala - 5+ years of software development with Java 8+ and 3+ years of Scala - 2+ years with Akka (Streams, Actors, HTTP, Persistence) - Experience designing high-availability systems and maintaining software at scale - Knowledge of MVC, microservices and event-driven architectures - CI/CD with Azure DevOps or Jenkins - AWS: API Gateway, ALB/NLB, Fargate, Lambda, S3, CloudWatch, IAM and CloudFormation - PostgreSQL and DynamoDB; Agile/Scrum experience - Demonstrated leadership on small to medium-scale strategic projects - Nice to have: Spring Boot REST APIs, functional programming, ZIO and reactive streaming - Stable work history; resume of 3 pages or fewer Responsibilities: - Develop notification services using Scala and Akka - Own complex systems work with minimal supervision - Identify and resolve complex application and technical problems - Build shared components used by multiple applications - Drive delivery of business-valuable features - Mentor engineers and maintain high quality standards and team practices - Guide code, program and operations documentation and user guides - Work with end users on development, debugging, integration and acceptance testing
